About Melina Beach Resort The Resort was started in 1999, and has grown steadily over the years. Every effort has been made throughout the resort's development to minimise impact on the environment and to create a resort which embraces nature rather than replacing it. When passing Melina Beach from the sea, it is quite easy to miss the resort as we have not built any structures on the seafront such as a jetty which may disrupt the marine environment. We have a very healthy and beautiful house reef in front of the resort and we like to keep it that way. With this in mind we encourage all visitors to practise responsible snorkelling. Tioman is a Marine Park, meaning that feeding of fish and collecting of shells is prohibited. Here at Melina Beach we strongly uphold these values and like to educate our guests about the importance of a healthy coral reef. We are also lucky to have access to a beautiful primary rainforest behind the resort which lies on the side of an extinct volcano; Gunung Kajang. There are several trails for intrepid explorers and Tioman has many endemic species of animals which can sometimes be spotted around the resort. Eco-Tourism Part of being an eco-resort is to try to help pass on an important message about the environment. Melina Beach Resort is proud to be the Tioman Education Centre of Ecofieldtrips Pte Ltd. Ecofieldtrips has been bringing school groups on conservation fieldtrips to Tioman Island for over a decade. Their aim is to inculcate positive attitudes about nature and to raise awareness of environmental problems that we can all help to resolve. Their biologists are often on hand to offer guided snorkelling trips or forest walks to guests. We are also blessed with the natural spectacle of sea turtles nesting on the beach adjacent to the resort. There is a problem with the poaching of turtle eggs in Tioman so it is occasionally necessary for us to re-locate eggs to our hatchery, where we incubate them safely in the most natural way possible until they hatch. Once the hatchlings appear at the surface we release them to begin their long journey out to sea in accordance with IUCN protocol. Whilst this sight is very rare, as a guest at the resort you may have the unique privilege of witnessing a nesting turtle or watching hatchlings being released. Our turtle hatchery is a very small effort in the fight to save turtles and thus our aim is to educate both the public and locals as to how we can work together to save these magnificent creatures. We work closely with other turtle hatcheries on the island; Juara Turtle Project and TAT Turtle Sanctuary are leading the way in trying to save Tioman's turtles.
